To avoid Aids, just take a shower

Jacob Zuma, the former deputy president of South Africa testified in his rape trial that he took a shower after having sex (raping in my opinion) with a HIV positive woman to avoid Aids. This is scandalous for two reasons (apart of course for the obvious ones). First, Mr. Zuma once headed the National Aids Council and the Moral Regeneration Campaign and he knows better than that. This is the reason why I think that it was rape, because I think that he couldn’t take precautions because the sex wasn’t consensual. Second, Mr. Zuma is perpetuating myths about Aids that professionals fighting that disease are trying hard to dispel. Mr. Zuma also testified that he was ready to marry his accuser. The sad thing about this trial is that it shows what the worst not only of South Africa, but also of Africa. There was a large group of people including kids outside the trial cheering and singing for Mr. Zuma. Rape is still not considered a crime and this is the reason why Mr. Zuma talked about the fact that he had been willing to marry his accuser. He was sending the message that he couldn’t have shamed her for after all he proposed her marriage.
