Andrew Sullivan has a great post on Congo and on the tragedy that is happening in that rich part of Central Africa.
- I believe that nobody cares about Congo because as I have said before, it is difficult to stop a national tragedy when there are no images on Television. In this world we live, without images, there is silence, and with silence comes inaction and a tolerance of the inevitable.
- Congo is ignored not only because its conflict is complex and without easy solution, but also because those who could do something to stop the conflict and to lessen the violence are under no pressure to do so.
- The trouble with Africa and with its problems in general isn't really racism, but rather fatality and the sense that Western Powers have that it is destined to be a place of violence, poverty, and of deadly diseases like aids in the world. This is the reason why their first priority is always containment that is to avoid that the ills spread in part of the continent when there are natural resources they care about about.
