The approval by the FDA of Plan B is controversial. Many argue that underage girls will be able to access to it (the age limit is 18 but girls who are less than 18 will be required to get medical approval), that in fact, this is a way to enable women to have an unlimited amount of abortions and that it will encourage promiscuity among girls. I don’t think those are valid arguments. First is there are many products which are forbidden to minors and which nevertheless are still available to adults. The fact that minors can get access to them is not a strong enough argument to forbid otherwise we would have a society without alcohol, cigarettes, R rated movies, and every other product, which are unsuitable for people of a certain age. Second, is that abortion is legal in the United States and that Plan B isn’t use to abort a fetusi, but to prevent a pregnacy to occur. Third, Plan B will encourage promiscuity among girls and women as much as condoms have encouraged promiscuity among males. Women are wanton creatures who resist sexual urges just because they are afraid to become pregnant. Women like all human beings live their private lives by finding a balance between their desires and their values. We don’t forbid the sale of beer because of the fear that people will become alcoholics. Thus, people should be consistent and impose the same unreasonable standards they impose on Plan B on other products and medications, which are equally if not more dangerous as Plan B. The FDA made the right decision because Plan B is a tool, which enables women to have more control of their fates. The decision to become a mother ought to be in the hands of the woman and not in the hands of people who will not share with her the responsibility to raise it.
