Yossi Melman explores, in Haarezt, the possibility and the feasibility of military strike on Iraq either by the United States or by Israel. Richard Perle is quoted in the article as saying, “I have no doubt that if it becomes apparent to President Bush that during his term Iran will achieve nuclear weapons, he will not hesitate to order a strike.” Scary, very scary.

Only Israel, for understandable reasons, reads the intelligence with a two year horizon. Fortunately, Bush will not be in office at a time when Iran is expected to develop a nuclear weapon.
Absent help, Israel does not have the capability to engage Iran on any sustained or effective basis. It would take every bit of Jewish ingenuity to strike even once. Therefore, Israel is reduced to cajoling America into engaging Iran.
It is doubtful that even Bush thinks (as much as he thinks) militarily engaging Iran is a wise idea.
Of course, the neocons are pissed because their predicted Middle East domino effect didn’t domino and seems to have left Israel in a more precarious state than ever - the irony never ends.
