Being a journalist and being sympathetic

Dan Goldberg defends Katie Couric against the vicious attacks made against her by some who believe that she was unsympathetic during her interview with John and Elizabeth Edwards. He points out correctly that as a journalist, Couric had the duty to play devil advocate and that she did it without crossing any boundary. The Edwards tragedy although it is first and foremost a personal one poses interesting issues about the balance between politics, public service, and personal lives. It would have been irresponsible for Couric to do a puff piece without emphasizing those issues. I watched the interview and I thought it was a balanced piece, which put the light on Elizabeth Edwards' grace and courage and the brave decision of the Edwards to continue their campaign.
