Quote of the early morning from Libby Purves decrying the role that mothers play in politics or rather in political elections.
Face it: parenthood is an extreme mind-altering drug, and those in its strongest grip should not be invited to swamp the political and economic argument any more than bankers, business leaders or trade unions. It is fatally easy to think of mothers, in particular, as saintly altruists sacrificing everything for their children, and therefore guarding all the virtues. But any honest mother (or properly involved father) knows deep down that it is not disinterested goodness or reason that fires us in the early years. It is what you might call transferred selfishness.
